What a Kitten Actually Needs
A growth formula, not adult food. Kitten recipes carry more protein, more fat and more calories per cup than adult food, plus the calcium and phosphorus balance growing bones need. Feeding a kitten adult food is the most common mistake we see, and it usually shows up as a leggy, underweight cat at six months.
Named animal protein first. Cats are obligate carnivores, and kittens even more so. Chicken, herring, salmon or lamb should be the first ingredient. If the list opens with maize or wheat, put the bag down.
DHA. An omega-3 fatty acid that supports brain and eye development. Good kitten foods add it from fish oil. It is the one ingredient worth checking for by name.
Moisture. Kittens raised on dry food alone often grow into cats that drink too little. Mixing in wet food from the start builds the habit and protects the kidneys later.
Small kibble. Sounds trivial, but a ten-week-old kitten with a full-size adult kibble will crunch half and leave the rest.

How Much and How Often
Kittens have small stomachs and big energy needs, so they eat little and often. A simple schedule that works:
