Hill's Hypoallergenic Dog Food - Limited Ingredients, Salmon Only

Hill's Science Plan Hypoallergenic is the range to reach for when you suspect your dog's food is the problem. Recurrent itching, ear trouble, loose stools or a coat that never quite comes right can all point to a reaction to something in the bowl, and the usual approach is to strip the diet back to a small number of carefully chosen ingredients.

Every formula here uses salmon as the only intact animal protein source. There is no grain: dried potatoes, potato starch and dried peas do the work instead. Fewer protein sources means fewer things your dog can react to, which is the whole point of a limited-ingredient diet.

Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids support skin nourishment, which matters because skin is usually where a food sensitivity shows itself first.

  • Small & Mini: smaller kibble for adult dogs up to roughly 10kg.
  • Medium: for adult dogs of about 11-25kg.
  • Large Breed: for adult dogs over 25kg.
  • Wet: a salmon pâté suitable across breed sizes, on its own or mixed with the dry.

One important note: these are adult formulas for dogs aged 1 to 6 years. Hill's does not recommend them for puppies, for pregnant or nursing dogs, or for older dogs. If you are unsure whether your dog's symptoms are dietary at all, it is worth talking to your vet first, since parasites and environmental allergens cause very similar signs.

Why a Limited-Ingredient Diet Works

A food sensitivity is a reaction to a specific ingredient, most often a protein the dog has eaten many times before. The difficulty is that an ordinary complete food may contain several animal proteins, so working out which one is causing trouble is close to impossible without simplifying the diet.

Hill's Science Plan Hypoallergenic takes that approach. Salmon is the only intact animal protein source in the formula. Grains are left out entirely, with dried potatoes, potato starch and dried peas providing carbohydrate instead. The result is a shorter, more predictable ingredient list.

The dry formulas are available in small & mini, medium and large breed versions, so kibble size and nutrient density match the dog. A salmon wet food is also available for dogs that prefer it or need extra moisture.

Skin, Coat and Digestion Support

Food sensitivity rarely announces itself politely. It usually turns up as itching, scratching, chewed paws, repeated ear problems, or a coat that looks dull no matter how often you groom.

These formulas include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support skin nourishment, alongside easily digestible ingredients that ask less of the digestive system. Potatoes and beet pulp are gentle on the stomach, and the shorter ingredient list reduces the number of possible triggers.

Give any elimination diet time. Skin turns over slowly, so four to eight weeks of feeding the food on its own - no other treats, chews or scraps - is the usual guidance before judging whether it has helped.
