The ultrasonic Outdoor Bark Control unit looks like any ordinary birdhouse that can hang in a tree, on a fence post, or anywhere outside. It detects barking from up to 15 metres away and has 3 range settings. Whenever your dog – or your neighbour’s dog – barks, he will hear a safe, high-pitched sound (inaudible to humans) that will cue him to stop his annoying habit.

When the Outdoor Bark Control is within range of a barking dog, an internal microphone picks up the sound and the unit is automatically activated. The unit emits an ultrasonic sound that can be heard by dogs but is silent to humans. Startled by the high-pitched sound that is safe and effective, the dog should stop barking, as it will associate its bark with this unpleasant noise. When the dog stops barking the ultrasonic sound also stops. The PetSafe Outdoor Bark Control has 4 settings, including 3 sensitivity levels to choose from that indicate what barking level activates the unit and a test mode.

To optimise the effectiveness of the unit: 
The unit has a range of 5, 10 or 15 meters emission and needs to be positioned so that the microphone and speaker are directed at the area where the dog's bark. If it is raised above the level of the dogs' heads, it must be tilted forward so that the microphone and speaker are directed at the dogs. If it is at the same level as the dogs, it must face the area where the dogs are and it is usually best to put it in the corner of the area so that it faces out from the corner for maximum coverage. The microphone sensor detects any loud noise within approximately 15m and emits an ultrasonic noise (not audible to humans but uncomfortable to dogs' sensitive ears). 
After about a week your dogs should associate the irritation of their ears with their barking and reduce their barking. 

Success rating: 
Depends entirely on the individual dog's hearing. Some dogs are not affected by the ultrasonic noise (they might be hard of hearing/going deaf, extremely well trained - eg police dogs - or have long furry ears that cover up the ear cavity so that their hearing is desensitised) and will not react to the unit. Some dogs absolutely hate it.
