Taste of the Wild: A Guide to the Range and PREY

Dogs and cats are hunters at heart. Even the most pampered sofa-dweller still has the instincts of an animal built to stalk, chase and feast on real meat. Taste of the Wild was created around that idea: feed pets the kind of proteins their wild relatives would recognise.

If you have seen the bags with painted bison, wolves and mountain lions on our shelves and wondered what makes the range different, this guide covers the essentials, from the brand’s story to choosing the right formula, plus where the newer limited ingredient PREY range fits in.

“Bison? For me? I knew you loved me.”
In this guide: who Taste of the Wild is, the proteins behind each recipe, how to pick the right formula for your pet, and what makes PREY different.

Who is Taste of the Wild?

Taste of the Wild is a family-owned pet food brand, and all of its food is made in the USA. The family behind it built the brand on a simple belief: every pet deserves proper nutrition, and every pet parent deserves fair value.

Their approach is summed up in the brandTheir approach is summed up in the brand’s own words: a modern diet inspired by nature.rsquo;s own words: a modern diet inspired by nature. In practice that means:

  • Unique animal proteins. Instead of building every recipe around chicken, the range uses bison, venison, smoked salmon, wild boar, roasted lamb, wild fowl, trout, quail and duck.
  • Grain-free recipes. The core range is made without grains, with no corn, wheat or soy.
  • Omega fatty acids to support healthy skin and a glossy coat.
  • Dog and cat recipes, including puppy, small breed and all-life-stages options.

Proteins they’d hunt for

Each formula is named after a wild landscape and built around the protein you would find there. A quick guide:

Bison & roasted venison
Smoked salmon
Wild boar
Roasted lamb
Wild fowl
Roasted quail & duck

Rotating between proteins can keep mealtimes interesting for fussy eaters. If you do switch, change over gradually (more on that below).

Choosing the right formula

Start with your pet’s life stage and size, then pick the protein they enjoy most.

Puppies High Prairie Puppy (bison & roasted venison), Pacific Stream Puppy (smoked salmon)
Adult dogs High Prairie (bison & roasted venison), Pacific Stream (smoked salmon), Wetlands (wild fowl)
All life stages Sierra Mountain (roasted lamb), Southwest Canyon (wild boar), Pine Forest (venison)
Small breeds Appalachian Valley Small Breed (venison)
Cats Rocky Mountain (roasted venison & smoked salmon), Canyon River (trout & smoked salmon), Lowland Creek (roasted quail & roasted duck)

“All life stages” formulas suit puppies, adults and seniors alike, which makes them handy in multi-dog homes. Always follow the feeding guide on the bag for your pet’s age and weight.

“I’ll take one of each, please.”
THE LIMITED INGREDIENT RANGE

Meet PREY

The pursuit of simplicity
Painted wild turkey from the Taste of the Wild PREY range

PREY is Taste of the Wild’s limited ingredient range. In the wild, a dog or cat’s diet was simple, made up mostly of the prey they caught. PREY takes the same approach: each recipe is built on just a handful of key ingredients, centred on one quality animal protein.

  • Dog recipes have four key ingredients: the protein, lentils, dried tomato pomace and chicken fat.
  • Cat recipes have three: the protein, lentils and chicken fat.
  • The proteins are pasture-raised Angus beef, cage-free turkey or real trout, with no rendered meats or by-product meals.
  • Grain-free recipes, made with non-GMO ingredients.
  • Every formula meets the AAFCO nutrient profiles for all life stages. The dog recipes also cover the growth of large breed puppies.

Because the ingredient list is so short, PREY suits pet parents who want to know exactly what goes into the bowl. If you are trying to work out whether a particular ingredient disagrees with your pet, a simple recipe like this can make that easier. Your vet can guide you through it.

Core range or PREY: which one?

Choose the core range if…
you want variety, love the idea of unique proteins like bison, wild boar and smoked salmon, or need a specific puppy or small breed formula.
Choose PREY if…
you prefer the shortest possible ingredient list, want one single animal protein in the bowl, or are working with your vet to identify an ingredient your pet doesn’t tolerate well.

Even the bags are a little wild

Those bison, wolves and mountain scenes on the bags are paintings by wildlife artist Kevin Ritchie. Each landscape matches the formula inside, so once you know your pet’s favourite, it’s easy to spot on the shelf.

How to switch to Taste of the Wild

A gentle 7-to-10-day changeover
1–3
Days 1 to 3
About a quarter new food, three quarters old.
4–6
Days 4 to 6
Half and half.
7+
Day 7 onwards
Three quarters new, then all new once tummies are settled.

If your pet has a sensitive stomach, take it slower and stretch each step over a few more days. Once you have fully switched, follow the feeding guide on the new bag, because portion sizes vary between foods.

Frequently asked questions

Is Taste of the Wild grain-free?

Yes. The core range and PREY recipes are grain-free, with no corn, wheat or soy. The bags note that the food is made in a facility that also handles other ingredients, so trace amounts may be present.

Where is Taste of the Wild made?

All Taste of the Wild food is made in the USA. Some ingredients come from vetted global suppliers.

Is there a Taste of the Wild formula for puppies?

Yes. High Prairie Puppy and Pacific Stream Puppy are made for growing dogs, and the all-life-stages formulas (Sierra Mountain, Southwest Canyon, Pine Forest and all the PREY dog recipes) also suit puppies.

What is the difference between PREY and the core range?

The core range offers a variety of unique proteins, often in combination, like bison with roasted venison. PREY keeps things as simple as possible, with one animal protein and only three or four key ingredients per recipe.

Does Taste of the Wild make cat food?

Yes. Rocky Mountain, Canyon River and Lowland Creek are made for cats of all life stages, and there are two PREY cat recipes: Angus Beef and Turkey.

Can I rotate between Taste of the Wild flavours?

Many pet parents do, to keep meals interesting. Switch gradually each time, especially if your pet has a sensitive tummy.
