Kittens can begin eating Royal Canin Mother and Babycat mousse from around 3 to 4 weeks of age as they start the weaning process. This ultra-soft mousse is designed as a transition food between mother's milk and dry kibble. From around 4 months of age, kittens can move on to Kitten dry food, which has a small kibble size suitable for young mouths. Many breeders start kittens on the brand from weaning, so your kitten may already be familiar with the brand when they come home to you.

Royal Canin Kitten food is formulated for kittens up to 12 months of age. After this point, most cats should transition to an adult formula. The exception is larger breeds like Maine Coon, which may have extended growth periods and can benefit from staying on kitten food slightly longer - the breed-specific kitten formula will provide guidance on this. When transitioning to adult food, follow a gradual changeover period of 7 to 10 days to prevent digestive upset.

Royal Canin Kitten food contains a precisely balanced combination of nutrients for healthy growth. This includes high levels of easily digestible protein to support muscle development, an adapted energy content to fuel activity and growth, an antioxidant complex (vitamins E and C, lutein, taurine) to support the developing immune system, DHA for brain and vision development, and balanced minerals including calcium and phosphorus for strong bone formation. Prebiotics are included to support digestive health, and the nutrient ratios are specifically calculated for the growth phase rather than adult maintenance.

Feeding amounts depend on your kitten's age, current weight and the specific formula. As a general guideline, young kittens (up to 4 months) should be offered food three to four times daily. From 4 to 12 months, you can reduce to two to three meals per day. Kittens are generally better at self-regulating their intake than dogs, so some owners leave dry kibble available for free-choice feeding, monitoring body condition to ensure their kitten maintains a healthy weight.

If your kitten has been neutered before 12 months of age, Royal Canin Sterilised Kitten is the recommended formula. Sterilisation changes a cat's hormonal balance, often leading to increased appetite and reduced energy expenditure, which can cause rapid weight gain. Sterilised Kitten is formulated with a moderate energy content to help prevent this while still providing all the nutrients needed for healthy growth. If your kitten was sterilised after starting on regular Kitten food, you should transition them to the Sterilised formula over 7 to 10 days.

From birth to weaning, Royal Canin Babycat Milk, described on the pack as 1st age milk. It is a powdered replacer with lactose content adapted to a kitten's immature digestion and no starch, and it dissolves instantly. From about three to four weeks, introduce Mother & Babycat mousse alongside it, then move to Kitten dry food from around four months. If the mother is present and feeding well, the milk is only needed as a top-up for large litters.

Persian Kitten has a kibble shape a flat-faced kitten can pick up, and Maine Coon Kitten supports a breed that grows larger and matures more slowly than most cats, usually staying on kitten food to around fifteen months. British Shorthair, Siamese and Sphynx have adult formulas only.
