Warm weather is perfect for getting outdoors with your furry friend, but if the pavement or beach sand is too hot, it could hurt your dog’s paws. Walking on hot asphalt, tar, concrete, or sand can lead to painful burns, discomfort, and even long-term paw damage. Here’s how to check if it’s safe to go for a stroll—and some products to help protect your dog’s paws when things heat up.
Use the “5-Second Test”: Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t comfortably hold it there for five seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. This simple test can be a quick indicator of potential danger.
Check the Weather and Timing: Asphalt can be 10-15°C hotter than the air temperature. On very sunny days, try to schedule walks in the early morning or evening when the ground has cooled down.
Watch Your Dog’s Reaction: Dogs will often lift their paws, walk stiffly, or try to avoid walking on hot ground. If you notice these signs, it’s time to switch to a grassy area or take a break indoors.
If you want to ensure your dog’s comfort and safety even on warm days, here are some products from Canine&Co that provide excellent protection and support for your pup’s paws:
